Q: What French topics does ATARprepAI cover?

Anything on your syllabus. Every topic and every syllabus point listed on this page starts a quiz on that point alone, and the topic box takes whatever else you type — including a dot point copied straight out of the study design.

Q: Is ATARprepAI free for French?

Yes. The Free plan is $0 forever, needs no card, and you can try a French quiz without even making an account. Free accounts get a monthly allowance of freshly generated quizzes; the current numbers are on the pricing page.

Q: Do I need an account to start?

No. You can generate and play a French quiz signed out. An account adds saved progress across devices, streaks, and a bank of the questions you got wrong.

Q: Which exam boards does it follow?

WACE, VCE, HSC, QCE and SACE. Pick yours and the French questions use that board's command words and paper structure rather than a generic global syllabus.

Q: Are the questions actually marked, or just answered?

Marked. You attempt the question first, then it comes back scored against the criteria — with the specific line that lost the mark and what would have earned it.

Q: Is this just ChatGPT with a different logo?

No. A chatbot hands you a finished answer. This makes you attempt the question yourself, then marks your work against the exam criteria.

Q: Can it mark my written French?

Yes. Paste your response and it comes back marked on content, structure, register and language, with each error named and corrected rather than just flagged.

Q: Does it help with the oral?

You can practise the content: discussion prompts, follow-up questions and structuring your detailed study answers.

The difference

Getting the answer isn't the same as learning.

A chatbot hands you a polished French answer. An examiner hands you marks. ATARprepAI closes that gap — you attempt the question, it marks your work, and you find out what to fix.

What you're actually tested on

What's on the French syllabus.

French is examined across listening, reading, writing and speaking, and the accuracy marks concentrate in a few predictable places: agreement, tense choice between passé composé and imparfait, and the subjunctive. Content and structure carry their own marks, so a well-organised response with minor errors outscores a flawless but thin one.

WACE · SCSASecond Language and Background Language courses run Units 1–4, with a SCSA written examination in listening, reading and writing plus a separate practical oral examination.
VCE · VCAAUnits 1–4 with an oral examination and a written examination covering listening, reading and writing; a detailed study is examined in the oral.
HSC · NESABeginners, Continuers and Extension pathways, with listening, reading and writing examined in a written paper and speaking in a separate oral examination.
QCE · QCAAUnits 1–4 with internal listening, reading and writing assessments plus an external examination.
SACE BoardContinuers and Beginners pathways at Stage 2, with school-assessed folio and in-depth study and an external written and oral examination.

Boards revise their syllabuses — check yours for the current wording. Every point above is a live topic in the quiz builder: tap one to be tested on it.

How it works

Practise the way French marks are actually earned.

Pick a topic

Choose one of the French topics above or type your own, then pick your state. WACE, VCE, HSC, QCE and SACE each word their questions differently, and the paper follows yours.

Attempt it yourself

Exam-style questions with the mark allocation showing, so you know how much to write. You answer them — nothing is handed to you.

Get it marked

Your answer comes back marked criterion by criterion in seconds — what you earned, what you half-earned, and what the examiner never saw.

Fix the gap

Rewrite your answer with the feedback beside it, or take a fresh question on the same point, and the topics you keep losing marks on come back around in review.

A worked marking example

See where the marks come from.

An example from French: the answer, the criteria it meets, and the detail it needs next.

Where the marks usually go: Language range is a separate criterion from accuracy. A response with no complex structures cannot reach the top band even if it contains no errors.

Question 1 of 5 Standard Written 10 marks

Write an article of about 250 words for your school’s French newsletter about a school trip, describing what happened and reflecting on what you learned.

Your answer

A response using article conventions, narrating past events with correct tense choice, and a reflective section using the imperfect and conditional.

AI practice mark 7/10

◑ Partial credit

AI estimate against generated practice marking points. This is not an official examiner result.

Where your marks came from

Uses article conventions with a title and structured paragraphs Earned3 of 3 marks
Addresses both the narration and the reflection Earned3 of 3 marks

Where you lost marks

Distinguishes passé composé and imparfait accurately across the narration Partial1 of 2 marks
Uses a range of complex structures — relative clauses, subjunctive, conditional Missed0 of 2 marks

Three mistakes that cost French marks every year

01
Choosing passé composé for description and imparfait for events. It is the other way round, and narration questions test it every year.
02
Forgetting past participle agreement with avoir when the direct object precedes the verb.
03
Switching between tu and vous inside one response, which is marked as a register error.

French questions that match your exam board.

Command words aren't decoration. NESA's describe and evaluate want different answers, and SCSA and VCAA each keep their own glossary. Pick your system and the French questions — and the marking — follow that board's language.
