French is examined across listening, reading, writing and speaking, and the accuracy marks concentrate in a few predictable places: agreement, tense choice between passé composé and imparfait, and the subjunctive. Content and structure carry their own marks, so a well-organised response with minor errors outscores a flawless but thin one.

How to improve

Where the marks usually go: Language range is a separate criterion from accuracy. A response with no complex structures cannot reach the top band even if it contains no errors.

Three mistakes that cost French marks every year

Choosing passé composé for description and imparfait for events. It is the other way round, and narration questions test it every year.
Forgetting past participle agreement with avoir when the direct object precedes the verb.
Switching between tu and vous inside one response, which is marked as a register error.
