Human Biology syllabus.

Human Biology is the WACE course that takes the body system by system, and its examination is unusually diagram-heavy: you are asked to label structures, read a graph of hormone or blood-gas levels, and then explain a mechanism in the right order. Marks live in the sequence — receptor, control centre, effector, response — far more than in the vocabulary.

WACE · SCSAThe ATAR course runs Units 1 and 2 in Year 11 and Units 3 and 4 in Year 12. The final mark is half school assessment and half the SCSA written examination, which pairs a multiple-choice section with short and extended responses built on diagrams and data.

How to improve

Where the marks usually go: Human Biology answers routinely name the hormone but not the target tissue, and a hormone with no stated site of action cannot score the application marks.

Three mistakes that cost Human Biology marks every year

Giving the structures of a mechanism out of order. Stimulus, receptor, control centre, effector and response are sequential marks, and a jumbled answer loses them even if every term is present.
Confusing nervous with hormonal control. If the question says “hormonal”, naming a nerve pathway scores zero no matter how accurate it is.
Describing a graph instead of interpreting it. "The line goes up" is not a mark; naming the hormone responsible for the rise is.
