Japanese syllabus.

Japanese is examined across the four macro-skills, and the marks in writing turn on things English does not have: three scripts, particles that carry the grammar, and a politeness system that has to match the person you are writing to. Getting the content right in the wrong register still costs marks.

How to improve

Where the marks usually go: A letter to a teacher is the classic register trap. Plain forms slipping in, or keigo used incorrectly, cost more than a vocabulary error would.

Three mistakes that cost Japanese marks every year

Mixing plain and polite forms inside one piece of writing. Consistency of register is separately marked.
Using は where が is required, particularly in subordinate clauses and with question words.
Writing loanwords in hiragana instead of katakana, which reads as a spelling error to a marker.
