Mathematics Standard 1 is the practical NSW course, built around the mathematics you actually meet — pay, tax, loans, measurement and reading data. How to improve

Where the marks usually go: The usual loss here is applying the overtime rate to all 44 hours — read which hours attract the loading before multiplying.

Three mistakes that cost Mathematics Standard 1 marks every year

Answering with the gross figure when the question asked for net, or the other way round.
Leaving out units, or mixing metres with centimetres partway through a measurement question.
Reading a table row instead of a column. Practising with real documents fixes this faster than practising arithmetic.
