The texts studied show that imagined worlds allow composers to criticise real society at a distance. In the prescribed text the invented setting exaggerates real power structures, which makes the reader see them more clearly, and my related text does something similar with a different society.

Where the marks usually go: Extension responses that treat the related text as a second example rather than a second argument stall in the middle bands however sophisticated the prose.

Three mistakes that cost English Extension 1 marks every year

Writing an Advanced essay with harder vocabulary. Extension rewards an argument about the concept that the texts serve, not a text study with the concept bolted on.
Choosing a related text that illustrates rather than extends. If swapping it out would not change the argument, it is not earning its place.
Quoting critics decoratively. A critical perspective has to be used, argued with or against.
